Why do this?All human reality, perception, communication, behavior are shaped by culture, but most people are unaware of their culture's profound impact. This assignment challenges you to uncover your own cultural programming.
How to write?1. Heading includes your name, class time, and "ICS 7 Personal Culture Assignment"
2. Write in essay or journal style, with paragraphs. 3. Type four (4) pages double spaced in 11 font. 4. Addressing all the prompts, brainstorming, reflecting, writing, and proofing should require 5-8 hours. |
What to do?Take time to reflect on "the world" you grew up in. Write about the IMPACT of your background, family, upbringing, influences shaping your childhood and adolescence.
How to turn in & GradingTurn in a stapled, hard copy--buy a stapler if you do not have one.
Grading will be based on: * Completeness (ie. whether all prompts addressed) * Depth of reflection and discussion of cultural impact * Authenticity and courage to identify one "lower affinity" group to you or your family and carefully record messages your received about them. |
Address BOTH parts and ALL prompts:
First part of assignment (three pages) 1. First, identify your ethnicity and your background which is the culture of your childhood. Discuss IMPACT of family culture and background on you— consider beliefs, values, and behaviors.
2. Select one or two social category such as race, socioeconomic class, gender, sexuality, immigration status, or religion and reflect in some depth how you have been impacted.
3. Consider also the impact of school and neighborhood environments.
Second part of assignment (one page)
1. From the perspective of your group, family, or yourself, identify a group that may be considered harder to relate, more controversial, and more likely to be stereotyped. For this assignment, this group must be a different race (eg. If your background is Asian, you must choose a non-Asian group), or sexuality (ie. LGBT), or a marginalized religion such as Islam.
2. Recall how this group has been been talked about by your family or reference group. Give multiple examples and then thoughtful reflections of these "messages" about this group that were communicated to you-- whether verbal, nonverbal, intended, or unintended.
3. Looking back, what do you make of these messages? What kinds of impact did they have on you growing up and now? Why?
