See syllabus for due date
OUTCOMES:
Arrange an empathetic, face-to-face interview with a person which may be regarded by you or your family or your culture/background as a “low-affinity” group in terms of either race, sexuality, or religion.
The purpose of this assignment is to connect and gain information with the interviewee in a positive manner—and practice establishing rapport, deeper understanding, and communicative confidence. Completing this assignment in a thoughtful and timely manner will take 6-12 hours.
STEPS
1. Make a list of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, acquaintances from the identified lower affinity group who may be willing to spend 1-2 hours in an interview. Rank list according to how available, open, thoughtful, and candid you think each person will be.
2. Ask top potential interviewees a few questions to determine who will be a good partner to help you develop a better understanding of the target group. Start to schedule an interview as soon as you can after receiving the assignment and try to conduct the actual interview at least a week before due date.
3. Do an internet search to find positive and helpful information about the group that you can incorporate into the beginning or end of the report.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
Adapt ALL questions below to your own voice to ask in scheduled face-to-face interview:
The interview report should be in an essay format, with a brief introduction about the interview process, followed by reporting how questions were answered, using quotations when helpful for understanding. Only at the very end, you can add your own reflections.
The paper should be 4 pages, typed double spaced, proof read for spelling and grammar, stapled with no folder. For “Sources” at the end, cite interview place and time, and any useful internet information consulted.
